| Tyler Surgeon Gets Assist for Tourney Win | Missouri bass pro Denny Brauer gives credit for his return to the winner's circle this month to Tyler surgeon Paul Detwiler.
Detwiler operated on Brauer's back in 2004, allowing him to fish without pain for the first time since a 1999 injury during an on-the-water incident.
Bauer won tournaments in 2002, 2003 and 2004, but was forced to change his fishing style because of pain.
"It means a lot," Brauer said after the win on New York's Lake Champlain, the 16th in his career. "It had been a couple of years since I had pieced a whole tournament together. You always start to wonder if the last win was going to be your last win, or will it ever come together right again at an event?"
Anthrax Found
A hot, dry summer has resulted in another outbreak of anthrax in Val Verde and Kinney counties in Southwest Texas.
The Texas Animal Health Commission reports confirmed cases in a pen of deer in Val Verde County and a bull in Kinney County.
While there is concern, officials say with precautions conditions are safe for ranchers and hunters.
"Vacationers and hunters get concerned about anthrax, but there is no need to worry, if proper precautions are taken," said Dr. Bob Hillman, TAHC state veterinarian.
"If you travel to an area where an anthrax case has occurred, avoid touching or handling sick or dead animals, don't pick up bones or shed antlers, and don't swim in ponds or streams where there are dead animals nearby. The same advice goes for your pets, too. By the time hunting season starts, cool weather usually puts an end to anthrax cases. Always harvest only healthy-looking animals."
Most of Texas' anthrax cases occur in portions of Crockett, Val Verde, Sutton, Edwards, Kinney, Uvalde and Maverick counties.
