This prestigious award recognizes outstanding advocacy efforts on behalf of hospitals or health systems, and Dr. Detwiler's dedication and leadership in advancing healthcare in East Texas have made him a deserving recipient.
Dr. Detwiler, the immediate past chair of the board of trustees of UT Health Tyler, has significantly enhanced healthcare in the region. Trained at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, he chairs the Physician Leadership Council at UT Health Tyler and leads the Physician Roundtable of Ardent Health Services. His leadership has been instrumental in expanding residency programs at UT Health Tyler, making high-quality healthcare more accessible to the community.
Under Dr. Detwiler’s leadership, UT Health Tyler transitioned to a teaching hospital model, launching a residency program in July 2020. His efforts were crucial in the Legislature's recent approval of a medical school for Tyler, a major achievement for Northeast Texas. His commitment to collaboration and his patient-centered approach have made a significant impact on the healthcare landscape in East Texas.
Dr. Julie Philley, executive vice president for health affairs at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, praised his ability to bring people together and his shared vision for the region. "It’s really about a team," she said. "He brings people together, he listens, he acts, he’s patient, he’s kind, and above all else, he has a vision that is shared by the institution and the region at large."
