Essential Tremor

Tyler Neurosurgical Associates specializes in essential tremor treatments

Essential Tremor is a nerve disorder that can cause involuntary and rhythmic shaking in different parts and on different sides of the body. This disorder can affect any part of the body, but occurs most often in the hands. Essential Tremor occurs when doing simple tasks, such as drinking from a glass or tying shoelaces. Essential Tremor is not life-threatening and can occur at any age but is most common in people ages 40 and older.

Essential Tremor vs Parkinson’s Disease

Often times people associate Parkinson’s Disease with Essential Tremor, but the two are different in key ways:

  • Tremors: Although tremors occur with both conditions, they may occur at different times. Essential Tremors usually happen when your hands are being used. Tremors from Parkinson’s usually occur when your hands are at your sides or resting in your lap.
  • Associated Conditions:Parkinson’s disease is associated with other medical conditions that include symptoms such as stooped posture, slow movement, and shuffling gait. Essential Tremor typically is not associated with other medical conditions.
